Medium Risk Confined Spaces – City & Guilds (6160-02)

This unit is for those who work in a medium risk environment. It includes entering and exiting medium risk confined spaces safely, focusing on using equipment and tools safely and following procedures when dealing with emergencies.
The course will also cover the choice and the use of gas monitoring equipment prior to entering and while working within the confined space along with the practical use of escape breathing apparatus.
It includes practical exercises in lock out procedure, permit writing, point of work risk assessments and rescue techniques.

Who is this training for?

Requirements
Participants will be required to undergo some physical exertion
No previous experience needed
Students should not suffer from claustrophobia
Students must sign a medical form before commencement
In order to safely take part in the training, all candidates must be able to work in a dark space without aid or assistance. It will also be necessary for any candidate to sign a medical release form, stating that they are medically fit to be able to complete the work. Candidates should not suffer from claustrophobia, because they may be required to work in tight and confined areas.

What is involved?

The Confined Space Medium Risk City & Guilds (6160-02) Course covers:
  • Identify and use appropriate protective equipment
  • Fall arrest blocks and their use
  • Categorise the type of confined space and identify associated risks
  • Use of gas and atmosphere monitoring equipment
  • The use of escape breathing apparatus sets
  • Use of the tripod entry system
  • Safe systems of work for confined spaces
Participants will learn to assess confined spaces and determine the most appropriate safety equipment. They will learn to monitor conditions to ensure their continued safety, and on completion of the course they will be able to ascertain the most effective and safest way to enter and exit the space.

How is this course assessed?

The assessment will consist of a practical observation during a team exercise and a short answer question paper.
